Tony Parsons: PM'S WIFE NO FIRST LADY.

Byline: Tony Parsons

DURING her first interview with American television, Cherie Blair gave NBC's Katie Couric a guided tour of Downing Street and Whitehall.

Soldiers snapped to attention, Union flags fluttered in the breeze and Cherie generally swanned around as though she owns the place. The NBC interview was set up through the organising committee of our 2012 Olympics, which warranted a very brief mention in passing.

But, by happy coincidence, in February Cherie is off to America for a speaking tour that will net her around pounds 150,000 for a handful of speaking dates and the NBC chatfest will flog a few tickets.

Katie Couric explained carefully to her American audience that Mrs Blair is not Britain's "First Lady" because "that title is reserved for the Queen".

But when will somebody explain that to Cherie?
