Tommy tax hits MPs for pounds 1m.

SCOTLAND'S politicians would pay an extra pounds 1million for public services under a tax proposed by SSP leader Tommy Sheridan.

The Scottish Socialist Party would abolish Council Tax and introduce a new Scottish Service Tax based on income rather than property.

Sheridan estimates it would bring in an extra pounds 1million from the country's 209 MPs, MSPs and MEPs.

He says it is unfair a Cabinet Minister on pounds 127,791 - 10 times more than a hospital ancillary worker - pays an average of pounds 1500 a year in Council Tax, just twice as much.

His plans would mean a tenfold increase for Scots in the UK cabinet - Gordon Brown, Alastair Darling, Helen Liddell and John Reid - who would pay pounds 18,658- a-year.

Sheridan said: "That's the amount they would be forced to cough up under a fair system based on income."
