Tom Hardy to Star as Spider-Man Villain in Venom.
Tom Hardy, star of films such as The Revenant and Mad Max: Fury Road , will add another role to his already impressive repertoire. And this time he'll be crossing universes to do it--from DC's to Marvel's.
Hardy--best known to comic book film fans as Bane, the antagonist of 2012's The Dark Knight Rises who communicates his feelings towards Batman by breaking his back--will be playing Venom, an archnemesis of Spider-Man's, in an upcoming film about the character. The film will be helmed by Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer. Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinker will write.
Sony Pictures announced the casting in a Tweet. The film will be releasing Oct. 5 th , 2018.

Venom made his comic debut in 1988. An extraterrestrial parasite, Venom is a gooey, liquid-like entity that endows enhanced powers upon its hosts--with nefarious goals in mind. The character proved popular, though, as with most decades-old comic book characters, Venom has had multiple incarnations and alliances, shifting generally from villain to antihero.
Its most famous host was Eddie Brock, who made his big screen debut in 2007's Spider-Man 3, portrayed by Topher Grace. Hardy is now taking-up that role.
The film will be a Sony Pictures production, and as such not part of Marvel Studios's Marvel Cinematic Universe--the studio responsible for the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming , starring Tom Holland. How on earth they'll be introducing the baddie without the trash-and-web-slingin' loudmouth he was created to pummel remains to be seen.
