Tokyo stocks open slightly lower on weak global economic data.

TOKYO, Feb. 23 Kyodo

Tokyo stocks opened slightly lower Thursday as weak economic data from China and Europe saw investor optimism for global economic growth recede.

In the first 15 minutes of trading, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average fell 11.18 points, or 0.12 percent, from Wednesday to 9,542.82. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 2.36 points, or 0.29 percent, to 823.04.

Tokyo stocks were also prone to face selling amid technical signs showing that the market is at an overbought level, brokers said. The Nikkei index ended above the 9,500 line for the first time in over six and a half months the previous day.
