Today it's Peterlee ... and tomorrow the world.
A village fitness enthusiast has added another first place finish to his growing trophy cabinet.
Michael Mallinson, 43, from Kirkburton won the inaugural Thorium Throwdown CrossFit competition for Masters athletes in Peterlee near Durham. The event attracted some of the best athletes from around the UK and Michael triumphed overall in the four fitness workouts in his category for those aged 40 and above.
CrossFit is a new exercise phenomenon that involves a wide range of strength tests.
Competitors were only informed which type of exercises they would be doing on the day of the competition.
They consisted of multiple types of weight lifts, pull ups, weighted lunges and kettlebell swings.
Michael, who trains at the CrossFit West Yorkshire gym in Leeds, came into the competition as the number one seed having also captained a team of four athletes to victory at the Tribal Clash fitness competition held on the Devonshire coast in August.
With this years' successful season now coming to an end, Michael has set his sights on yet more intense training over the winter; with qualification to the 2015 world CrossFit Games in America his main goal.
