KUWAIT, June 6 (KUNA) -- 1961 -- An Amiri Decree was issued organizing the election of municipal council members. 1964 -- Kuwait signed -- alongside Egypt, Syria, Iraq, and Jordan -- the Arab Economic Unity Agreement aimed at establishing an economic union for the members and annulling all commercial restrictions. 1965 -- Austrian Dr. Arthur Breistavoteur presented his credentials to His Highness the Amir Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Alآ Sabah as Austria's first ambassador to Kuwait. 1967 -- The Amir Sheikh Sabah Alآ Salem Alآ Sabah issued a decree establishing the Kuwait National Guard (KNG) as an independent authority, under the umbrella of the supreme council of defense, with volunteer subscription allowed for Kuwaiti nationals. The squad will assist the armed forces and public security authorities. Sheikh Salem Alآ Ali Alآ Salem Alآ Sabah was appointed chief of the KNG. 1976 -- An Amiri Decree was issued establishing the Higher Institute for Music Arts. 1979 -- The Amir Sheikh Jaber Alآ Ahmad Alآ Sabah issued a decree by law approving Kuwait's membership in the 1974 International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) and its 1978 protocol. 1993 -- The Amir Sheikh Jaber Alآ Ahmad Alآ Sabah issued a decree establishing the Cabinet's Consultative Bureau, comprising nine members, aimed at providing consultation and conducting studies on different issues and in different sector. Its first meeting was held on October 12, 1993, under chairmanship of His Highness the Crown Prince and Prime Minister Sheikh Saad Alآ Abdullah Alآ Salem Alآ Sabah. 1995 -- Kuwaitis headed to polls to elect their deputies for the municipal council as 43 candidates were contesting ten seats. Abdulrahman Alآ Houti was appointed as chairman for the 16آ member council. Six other deputies were appointed by the government. 1998 -- The National Assembly approved a draft law amending articles of electoral law stipulating that voters or nominees would not be allowed to contest constituency of candidacy announcement of elections' results. They still had the right to contest but right after the registration period. 2000 -- Alآ Watan publishing house began issuing the American Newsweek magazine in its Arabic edition two years after an agreement was signed. 2003 -- The Public Authority for Applied Education and Training (PAAET) established the first center in Kuwait for projects of students of vocational studies. The center took more than 24,000 projects and would provide a number of direct and indirect job opportunities. 2006 -- His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Alآ Ahmad Alآ Jaber Alآ Sabah inaugurated Dasman Center for diabetes research, studies and treatment. The facility, the biggest of its kind in the Middle East, cooperated with other specialized bodies in the world. The center was an idea suggested by the late Amir His Highness Sheikh Jaber Alآ Ahmad Alآ Jaber Alآ Sabah. 2011 -- Deputy Premier and Minister of Justice and Minister of Social Affairs and Labor, Dr. Mohammad Alآ Afasi issued a decision to amend the second article of the ministry's law 2010, dealing with field labor working hours, banning work from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in open areas during summer time. 2012 -- Minister of Justice, Minister of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs Jamal Shehab tenders his resignation to His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Alآ Ahmad Alآ Jaber Alآ Sabah. However, His Highness the Amir turned it down and ordered him to continue services in the ministerial post. (end) gta
