Today FM wins right to Premier matches.

Byline: SHARON MILLAR

TODAY FM has won the right to broadcast live soccer action from the English Premiership, it emerged yesterday.

The commercial radio station secured the contract after beating a rival bid from state broadcaster RTE.

And in a separate move the station also announced that Johnny Giles will be joining the commentary team.

Today FM sports editor Tim Tuomey said: "Johnny Giles will be a great addition to the team." Today FM sources said the station had paid a "substantial six figure sum" to air the Premiership games.

Saturday afternoon commentary will kick off next Saturday and show bosses are "delighted" with the news.

Mr Tuomey said: "It's fantastic for us and a clear endorsement of the standard of our soccer coverage.

"Our commitment to maintaining the high standards the league expects was pivotal to our success in retaining the contract."
