On this day: 1620 - Pilgrims set sail from England on the Mayflower. 1701 - James Francis Edward Stuart, the "Old Pretender", becomes the Jacobite claimant to the thrones of England and Scotland. 1906 - Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen discovers the Magnetic South Pole. 1959 - The first successful photocopier, the Xerox 914, is launched in New York. 1978 - Filming starts on Monty Python's Life of Brian, above. 1988 - Scots singer Derek Dick, aka Fish, leaves Marillion. 1992 - The pound is forced out of the European Exchange Rate Mechanism in what is called Black Wednesday. 1994 - The British government lifts the broadcasting ban imposed against members of Sinn Fein and Irish paramilitary groups in 1988.
