Tishman breaks ground for prototype school.

Ground was broken recently on a four-story, 79,000-square-foot school in the Highbridge section of Manhattan (Public School 8M) -- another component of the School Construction Authority of New York's (SCA) massive program to rejuvenate New York City's educational facilities.

Tishman Construction Corporation is serving the SCA as construction manager on the prototype school, designed to accommodate 650 kindergarten through fifth-grade students, as well as serve the needs of the surrounding community. The firm is currently completing construction of Intermediate School 90, an 1,800-student middle school located directly across the street.

Designed by Gruzen Samton Stein-glass Architects, the prototype L-Shaped school structure will cover an entire city block in a heavily populated residential and commercial neighborhood. The building will house 30 classrooms, a library, computer room, cafeteria, gymnasium, auditorium, administrative offices, and a 375-square-foot community room. Due to the limited amount of playground space, the gymnasium roof will serve as an extended playground. Its stepped-level configuration will allow student access from the ground level, second floor lobby and third floor.

In addition to its primary function, the school will provide a community center, along with ample space for night classes, social functions and other activities for the neighborhood's residents.

Working closely with the SCA since the project's inception, Tishman professionals provided detailed preconstruction analysis on the school's overall design, as well as conducted value engineering studies of its architectural, structural, and mechanical systems. In order to provide maximum flexibility and comfort, the project team will individually tie all building systems to three distinct modules -- classrooms, administrative areas, and common areas -- enabling the administration to operate each sector independently. Prior to the start of construction, Tishman's team managed the demolition of several vacant warehouses, factories, and garages that occupied the property.
