Tips on fire safety.

FIRE safety advice is being delivered with shopping in a partnership between the fire service and Liverpool Mencap.

Mencap runs a shopping scheme at Sainsbury's in Woolton .

Now, as well as delivering shopping to housebound residents, the team will also be generating home fire safety checks.

Merseyside fire service's older person's advocate, Cathy Owens, contacted the group to see if it could help make vulnerable residents safe.

She said: "I read an article in the ECHO about the group - they collect shopping lists from the elderly and housebound and deliver the items back to their homes.

"I believed it would be an excellent way of helping us to reach the vulnerable."

Now when the teams visit customers they will also ask if they would like free smoke alarms fitting.

The Liverpool Mencap shopping service is funded by the European Social Fund and Liverpool council.
