Tips for using Science World in the classroom.

To help kick-start classroom discussions, Priscilla Chan, a science teacher at Brooklyn School for Collaborative Studies in New York City, suggests: Prepare an anticipatory guide: a three-column table, labeled "Statements," "Disagree," and "Agree." Then, come up with four statements about the article to be read that students may have different opinions about, such as "Most adults get acne," and write them in the "Statements" column. Hand out copies of the anticipatory guide to students and have them work in groups to discuss each statement. To excite discussion, ask which groups agreed with a statement and which groups disagreed (and why). Students then read the article. After reading, have students revisit the anticipatory guides and use evidence from the article to reconsider their previous opinions.
