Time team; PICK OF THE DAY LIFE ON MARS BBC1, 9pm.

Byline: by Jane Simon

TAKE a look at the lawman, beating up the wrong guy. Oh man, wonder if he'll ever know, he's in the best selling show-ow-ow-ow...

So sang David Bowie in his song Life On Mars and 33 years later it sets up this time-travelling cop show.

I can't remember the last time there was a police drama worth getting so excited about. John Simm stars as DCI Sam Tyler who's investigating a run-of-the mill murder case when he's hit by a car and wakes up in 1973.

He's trapped in a world that resembles an episode of The Sweeney - all Cortinas, flared trousers and a boss (Philip Glenister) who calls women "birds" or "skirts".

Is Tyler dead? Is he dreaming? Or has he come from the future to teach the plods from the past not to drop ketchup over the forensic evidence and to point out the error of their fashion ways?

"Where's my PC terminal?" he demands. "PC who?" they reply.

If I woke up in 1973, I'd invent iPods, bet on Red Rum in the Grand National then write Harry Potter. But Sam has his hands full just trying to work out how to wake up. Utterly brilliant.
