Time of the essence to save lives.

TELEVISION presenter Llewela Bailey is backing a campaign to get more people to do voluntary work for the British Heart Foundation.

She was at the charity's shop in Harborne High Street to launch the Hand on Heart campaign which aims to persuade people to give up their time on behalf of the charity.

BHF fund-raising volunteer manager Donna Stokes said as well as bringing much-needed funds into the charity's coffers, volunteering also gave the "feelgood" factor.

She said surveys had found that two-thirds of their volunteers said working for the charity made them feel less stressed and had improved their physical health and fitness.

"The BHF would not be able to save lives through pioneering heart research or provide care for patients through our network of nurses and Heart HelpLine without the vital funds raised by our dedicated volunteers," she said.

"That's why this June we're asking you to put your hand on your heart and support the BHF by donating your time.

"You can volunteer any way you want to and we'd love to hear your ideas on how you want to help." Ways that people can get involved include placing collection boxes in their school or workplace, doing fund-raising and volunteering in a shop.

Another way is promoting Heart Matters - BHF's free membership and information service.
