This memoir by poet-philosopher Josephine Pasternak (1900-93) is an important contribution to the study of Russian women's autobiography. Spanning the period 1913-26, the daughter of a noted painter Leonid Pasternak and sister of novelist Boris Pasternak (who later wrote Doctor Zhivago) candidly chronicles growing up in a famous Moscow family in pre- and early post-Revolution Russia and working as a liberated, yet troubled young woman in Germany. The book features art by Leonid Pasternak, photos of the Pasternak family, a critical essay on Josephine's memoirs in the context of Russian women's autobiographical writing, and a select bibliography of her publications.
