Thyroid Cancer: A Comprehensive Guide to Clinical Management

Edited by Leonard Wartofsky, 517 pp, with illus, Totowa, NJ, Human Press, 1999.

As the title suggests, this book is a detailed collection of chapters discussing all aspects of malignant thyroid disease. The text emphasizes the clinical management of thyroid carcinoma and provides a wealth of fundamental information. Subjects discussed include clinical presentation, diagnosis, pathology, cytology, imaging, surgery, prognosis, medical therapy, and long-term evaluation for patients with different types of thyroid carcinoma. The table of contents is well organized and covers all current aspects of the pathophysiology epidemiology, and medical/surgical care of thyroid malignancy.

The editor is a well-recognized authority in the field of thyroid disease, and the contributing authors offer world-class expertise in endocrinology, endocrine surgery, oncology, molecular biology, radiology and cytopathology. The chapter narratives are concisely written and heavily weighted toward clinical information and patient management issues. All the elements of common and unusual thyroid malignancies are covered in great detail. Many of the chapters contain helpful algorithms to guide clinicians in patient problem management. The chapters detailing the cytology and pathology of thyroid carcinoma include vital and clear illustrations to pinpoint important features and micrographs of thyroid neoplasia.

The information contained in the text is well referenced and up-to-date. One of the greatest strengths of this book is the inclusion of clear tables and figures that summarize important concepts presented in the chapters. An extensive collection of current references concludes each chapter and provides additional supportive information. Many of the chapters contrast and compare differing viewpoints regarding the care of the patient with thyroid carcinoma through critical analysis of data from a variety of sources.

The text is organized in concise chapters that provide comprehensive evidence-based reference material for busy practicing clinicians and surgeons. Some chapters provide an overview of important basic concepts, while other sections explain complicated and specific information regarding the theory and practice of managing thyroid carcinoma. Each chapter provides information regarding controversial and well-accepted principles of caring for the patient with thyroid carcinoma and includes clinically relevant information describing the role of genetic testing, recombinant human thyroid-stimulating hormone, and the molecular pathogenesis of thyroid carcinoma.

The editor and contributing authors meet and surpass the goal of creating a text that provides current treatment recommendations for the patient with common and unusual forms of thyroid carcinoma. In summary, this is an excellent text that provides a clear and comprehensive narrative guiding the clinician in the management of all patients with thyroid carcinoma.
