This Second World War drama should be a damp squib, but it works well thanks largely to a snappy script from Lillian Hellman, who adapted it from her own story. The people of a small Russian village band together to defend their town against invading Nazi forces and are prepared to go to great lengths to save their community. Anne Baxter stars.

INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS *****

SKY MOVIES MODERN GREATS 3.50pm

Donald Sutherland and Jeff Goldblum (top) star in this remake of the classic sci-fi thriller. He plays a San Francisco health inspector, who becomes suspicious of people who are behaving strangely across the city. It's not long before he uncovers the terrifying truth - aliens have invaded Earth and are gradually replacing the human race with emotionless duplicates.

SCHOOL FOR SCOUNDRELS **

SKY MOVIES COMEDY 8pm

A shy parking attendant (Napoleon Dynamite's Jon Heder) enrols on a confidence-building course as he tries to win the heart of the girl of his dreams (Jacinda Barrett).However, he soon realises he faces stiff competition for the lady's affections, particularly from the man he'd enlisted to help him snare her in the first place (a well cast Billy Bob Thornton, above, right). Michael Clarke Duncan also stars.

QUICKSAND ***

A New York banker is sent to Monaco to investigate suspicious transactions involving a movie starring a washed-up action hero and soon discovers the dodgy dealings are being carried out by the Russian mafia, who have bankrolled the production. Michael Keaton and Michael Caine head the cast of this enjoyable crime caper.

THE HOWLING *****

STV 12.15am

A traumatised television news reporter is sent to an isolated Californian retreat with orders to enjoy a spot of rest and relaxation from her doctors. Her holiday takes a nightmarish turn when she discovers her sanctuary is home to a pack of were wolves. Dee Wallace, Patrick Macnee, Kevin McCarthy and Dick Miller star in this cult horror.
