Three new smartphone apps for ramblers go on trial.

A TOURISM organisation has launched a series of digital e-trails for walkers, hikers and ramblers as a pilot project that will be rolled out across rural Wales.

Available online for download as an app, Tourism Partnership MidWales is initially introducing three new e-trails in the region, featuring walks in Montgomery, Machynlleth and the Ceredigion coast.

Each is themed around the source, history, creation and preparation of local food produce.

Dee Reynolds, regional strategy director, said: "We are blazing an e-trail to ensure tourism initiatives stay ahead and in tune with the growing demand for digital information sources.

"They offer us the opportunity to deliver amazing and detailed content, which is instantly accessible for visitors. It is in all our interests to use technology to help support Mid Wales' food and tourism businesses."

She said the pilot project is due to become part of a wider initiative which the Assembly plans to roll out across all parts of rural Wales next year.

The three new e-trails are delivered to walkers via a new mobile app, "Trails Cymru". The free app is available for the iPhone and Android smartphones using technology and information from The People's Collection Wales.

Each e-trail provides walkers with enhanced audio and visual information about the area, historic images, archive and contemporary video and audio, plus detailed trail maps using GPRS to locate the walking party along the route and deliver appropriate content.
