Thornton Tomasetti acquires firm.

Thornton Tomasetti, the international engineering firm, announced the acquisition of Simon & Associates, Inc. (S&A), a sustainability consulting firm located in San Francisco.

Simon & Associates' team will become part of Thornton Tomasetti's Building Sustainability practice.

S&A founder, Lynn N. Simon, becomes a senior vice president at Thornton Tomasetti and will lead the West Coast efforts of the practice.

She will collaborate with the firm's leadership in California and principal Gunnar Hubbard, who leads the Building Sustainability practice.

S&A was established in 1994 by Simon and is recognized as a leader in the sustainability field. Its client base is a mix of non-profit organizations, government agencies, developers, architects and contractors.

It has 61 LEED-certified projects to its credit, 50 of which have achieved LEED Gold or LEED Platinum certification.

Simon has more than 20 years of experience in the green building industry and is both a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects and a LEED Fellow.

In 2005, she was named one of the 25 Environmental Champions by EnvironDesign Journal and last year she was recognized by the U.S. Green Building Council with its President's Award.

Gunnar Hubbard, AIA, LEED Fellow, principal, Portland, Maine, Thornton Tomasetti, commented, "Having a highly respected firm such as Simon & Associates join us significantly strengthens our leadership in the sustainability field"

Simon, FAIA, LEED Fellow, commented, "The nature of green building is evolving and to be part of a firm that has an expanding definition of how sustainability can be integrated in each of its practices and its business operations is exciting. There is going to be a much greater link in the future between sustainability and building envelopes, performance and structural design. By becoming part of the Thornton Tomasetti team, this will give us the ability to have a greater influence on the greening of buildings both in the United States and internationally."
