Thomas Jefferson: the first advocate for simplification.

Thomas Jefferson was born 250 years ago this month, on April 13, 1743. According to an April 1972 Journal article ("Thomas Jefferson: Management Accountant," by William G. Shenkir, Glenn A. Welsch and James A. Bear, Jr., page 33), Jefferson had a keen appreciation for accounting and kept detailed accounting records for 50 years.

Jefferson also was among the nation's earliest backers of simplified government accounting practices and a champion of fiscal responsibility. The article quotes a letter written in 1802 by Jefferson to his Treasury secretary that said, in part, "I think it an object of great importance, to be kept in view and to be undertaken at a fit season, to simplify our system of finance, and bring it within the comprehension of every member of Congress."
