This month's one-time-only chances to buy special plants.

Horticultural and educational groups in northern California, Colorado, and Utah will hold a variety of plant sales this month. Attending one can be fun and educational: you will find many plants not generally available through retail sources, and learn how to grow them (knowledgeable volunteers will likely be on hand for questions).

Admission to these sales is free. It's wise to bring boxes or cartons. CALIFORNIA

San Francisco. May 5. The Strybing Arboretum Society will hold its annual plant sale from 10 to 2 at the Hall of Flowers, Ninth Avenue and Lincoln Way in golden Gate Park. This popular sale offers rare plants that thrive in the fog belt.

Lafayette. May 5. The Lafayette Garden Club's plant sale will be at the Masonic Temple, 925 Moraga Road, from 9 to 2.

Sacramento. May 5. Drought-toleant plants are a specialty of the N Street Conservation Garden's plant sale, from 9 to 2 at the garden, 17th and N streets. For a list of plants, call (916) 441-1950.

San Rafael. May 5. From 9:30 to 3, the Marin Branch of the American Fuchsia Society will hold its annual plant sale at the Montecito Shopping Center, Third Street.

San Rafael. May 5. The Marin County Orchid Society will have its annual Orchid and Plant Sale in front of Longs Drug Store in the Northgate Shopping Center, 442 Las Gallinas Avenue, from 9 to 4.

Santa Cruz. May 5. The UC Santa Cruz Farm and Garden will hold its annual plant sale in front of the Barn Theater at the main university entrance, Bay and High streets. Hours are 11 to 1.

Suisun City. May 9. Solano Community College Horticulture Club's Spring Plant Sale will run from 9 to 9 in the Student Center lobby at the college, Suisun Valley Road. Look for house plants, native and exotic landscape plants, bedding plants, and vegetables.

Cupertino. May 11 and 12. The African Violet Society of South Bay will hold its spring show and sale at Vallco Fashion Park, 10123 N. Wolfe Road. Hours are 2 to 9 Friday, 10 to 6 Saturday.

Santa Cruz. May 12. The Spring Festival of Plants by the Arboretum Associates of UC Santa Cruz will include tours, free workshops, and a sale. Hours are 10 to 4. Park at the university's main entrance, Bay and High streets, and use the free shuttle bus to the arboretum.

San Mateo. May 12. The San Mateo Men's Garden Club's annual plant sale will take place at borel Center, 17th Street and El Camino Real, from 9 to 4. Proceeds help support a horticultural scholarship program.

San Rafael. May 12. The Chrysanthemum society of Marin will hold its annual Spring Chrysanthemum Plant Sale at the Montecito Shopping Center, 409 Third Street, from 9 to 2. Plants are only 50 cents apiece.

Saratoga. May 12. From 8:30 to 3, the Foothill Men's Garden Club will hold a plant sale at the Saratoga Village Shopping Center on Big Basin Way and Saratoga--Los Gatos Road.

Walnut Creek. May 12. The Northern California Chrysanthemum Society will sell rooted chrysanthemum cuttings in the parking lot behind First Interstate Bank, 1350 N. Main Street, from 9 to noon. Most plants will cost 50 cents each, or $17.50 for a flat of 42 plants.

Berkely. May 3. The UC Botanical Garden is sponsoring its annual Spring Plant Sale (including tours) from 9 to 3 at the garden, on Centennial Drive in Strawberry Canyon. Many of the plants for sale are almost impossible to find elsewhere.

Aptos. May 13 and 17. Cabrillo College will sell annuals, perennials, vegetable plants, and colorful baskets at the Cabrillo Amphitheater. Hours are 9 to 6. There is plenty of free parking at the college, 6500 soquel Drive. COLORADO

Denver. May 11, 12. The Denver Botanic Garden's plant sale will be held from 9:30 to 5:30 at 1005 York Street in Cheesman Park. Many rock garden plants from the garden's fine collection will be for sale.

Colorado Springs. May 24 through May 27. The Horticultural and Art Society of Colorado Springs will conduct it plant sale between 8:30 and 5 at the Honnen Ice Rink on the Colorado College campus. UTAH

Salt Lake City. May 19. The State Arboretum of Utah will hold its annual Plant Sale and Green Spree at the Arboretum Center on the campus of the University of Utah.
