This is your garden.

This is your garden. Maggie Smith. Crown, 1998. Unpaged. $14.00. 0-517-70992-9. PreS - Grade 1.

For younger readers and listeners. "This is your garden. It is yours and yours alone. It is yours for keeps." A little girl is given a garden plot to tend, and readers follow the growth of her seeds from tiny sprouts to brilliant flowers. There is gentle instruction throughout the text as we are introduced to the tools she will need to keep her garden healthy as well as the various tasks (weeding, watering) that await any aspiring green thumb. Although the illustrations are bright and active, the most charming aspect of the book is the child's attitude towards her plants: She sings them songs of encouragement, and knows they will always be happy to see her.
