This empire is planning to strike back.
Byline: COMMENT BY GRAHAM HISCOTT
JOHN Lewis's profit plunge was yesterday likened to "the fall of the Roman empire".
Dramatic stuff. But then, John Lewis has shamed rivals for years. If it's got a cold, you can bet lesser rivals are suffering a severe flu.
John Lewis is gambling on attack being the best form of defence. It's splashing out on big-bucks adverts - including hiring Sir Elton John for its festive blitz - plus investment in product ranges and IT. But staff are being cut, its worker bonus has been slashed and it's considering closing its prized pension scheme.
Unlike Rome, John Lewis's demise won't be sudden - or guaranteed.
