This Year's Mother's Day Bouquet Can Also Deliver What Every Woman Should Know About Osteoporosis.

'Mom's Treat' Floral Package Will Benefit National Osteoporosis Foundation

EAST HANOVER, N.J., April 12 /PRNewswire/ -- A major pharmaceutical company and an Internet/toll-free floral retailer have teamed up to create a Mother's Day gift called "Mom's Treat" that delivers more than just flowers.

With each "Mom's Treat" order, Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation, makers of a treatment for postmenopausal osteoporosis called Miacalcin(R) (calcitonin-salmon) Nasal Spray, and Proflowers.com provide:

-- a floral arrangement with roses, gerbera daisies, larkspur, and lilies

and a greeting card

-- educational information about osteoporosis

-- a free, 10-minute Sprint Prepaid Foncard(SM) for the person placing

the order as a reminder to call Mom

Additionally, five percent of "Mom's Treat" sales will be donated to the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF). The campaign aims to raise awareness for osteoporosis because the majority of women who have the disease are unaware of their condition; osteoporosis frequently exhibits no warning signs until it is well underway. Currently, an estimated 23 million American women have the bone-thinning disorder, which may affect one in every two women over a lifetime.

"I want every woman in America to know what my mom and I now know: osteoporosis is a treatable disease," explains campaign spokesperson Linda Dano, Emmy Award-winning television star, whose mother has osteoporosis. Dano appears in NBC's "Another World."

Sandra C. Raymond, Executive Director of the National Osteoporosis Foundation, hopes that this campaign and Dano's message will inspire many women to take action against osteoporosis. "I am delighted that Novartis and Proflowers.com have developed a unique campaign that has the potential to reach thousands of women -- mothers and daughters -- who are at risk or are suffering from osteoporosis with important information on fighting this disease," says Raymond.

"Mom's Treat" can be ordered through the Proflowers.com website, http://www.proflowers.com, or through a toll-free number, 1-800-PROFLOWers (1-800-776-3569). It costs $29.95 plus shipping.

Osteoporosis: A Debilitating Disease That Can Be Treated Literally "porous bone," osteoporosis is a disease of the bone in which excessive loss of bone tissue results in decreased bone mineral density and increased susceptibility to fracture. Osteoporosis is responsible for approximately 1.5 million fractures annually, nearly half of which occur in the spine. Susceptibility to osteoporotic-related fracture may be, in part, hereditary since young women whose mothers have a history of spinal fractures also seem to have reduced bone mass.

National Osteoporosis Foundation

The National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) is America's leading resource for people seeking up-to-date, medically sound information on the causes, prevention, detection and treatment of osteoporosis. The NOF's first and foremost mission is to reduce the widespread incidence of osteoporosis through programs, research, education and advocacy.

Miacalcin(R) Nasal Spray

Miacalcin Nasal Spray is currently approved for the treatment of osteoporosis in women who are more than five years past menopause and for whom estrogen replacement therapy is not an option. Novartis filed for a supplemental new-drug application with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in July 1998 for use of Miacalcin Nasal Spray for prevention of spinal fractures.

Miacalcin Nasal Spray should be taken with adequate calcium and vitamin D. Clinical trials have shown that the overall incidence of side effects from Miacalcin are comparable to placebo. Most commonly reported side effects are nasal irritation such as runny nose, crusting and nosebleed, back and/or joint pain, and headache. Because calcitonin is a protein, the possibility of a systemic allergic reaction exists.
