Thirteen Principal Upanisads, vol. II: Mandukya Upanisad with Gaudapada Karikas.

Prof. Dave continues here the project he inherited from the late P. B. Gajendragadkar, which has grown from its original task of publishing "Ten Principal Upanisads" to "Thirteen." Dave, now the sole editor and compiler, published volume one, comprising Prasna and Mundaka upanisads, in 1988. This edition of the Mandukya with Gaudapada's Karikas is far more than a rendition of the texts. The editor translates expansively and comments upon each karika (the upanisad itself, its twelve mantras making it the shortest of all the major upanisads, is cited in the context of Gaudapada's commentary); he then gives excerpts from the standard commentators' glosses, Samkara, Ramanuja, Madhva, etc., and, finally, glosses the opinions of contemporary authorities. The whole is a complete, if dense, appraisal of Gaudapada, which emphasizes (as would surprise no one) the advaitic lineage of the text. Instead of footnotes, an extensive index of terms and authors is appended. There is, however, no bibliography, and the format of the work is unnecessarily confusing--very much an example of Indian commentatorial literature, but with no clear demarcation (as was so elegantly done by the old Nirnaya Sagar Press) of the layers of commentary. It is not even the case that the major text figures necessarily at the top of the page--everything is printed seriatim, giving the whole the unfortunate air of a jumble.
