Thieves steal old lady's zimmer frame.

AN ELDERLY woman was left distressed after metal thieves stole her zimmer frame.

Police in Stanley, County Durham, are currently investigating a number of incidents, which happened over the weekend, and urging residents to keep metal items secure.

On Saturday morning a zimmer frame was stolen from the back yard of a house in Ash Terrace, Tantobie. And five metal window shutters which had been removed by the owner and were awaiting collection were stolen from the rear yard of premises at the shopping centre in Stanley between 8pm on Sunday and 8am the following day. Stanley Neighbourhood Insp Amanda Cathrine said: "Stealing a walking frame which is clearly the property of a vulnerable elderly person is a despicable act and the victim, a woman in her late 80s, was left in extremely distressed state by the theft." "We believe thieves are travelling around the Stanley area early in the morning with the aim of spotting metal items in particular to steal and would urge people who see this type of suspicious activity to contact us with registration numbers if possible. Householders should try to ensure metal items are not left on view."
