They raised the roof.
Removing the old roof and replacing it with a new, steeper one helped
give this living room more volume and brightness. Before, the room had
an ordinary 8-foot ceiling and opened onto a dark, covered porch. To
expand the room, architect Michael Sheats of Berkeley pushed the walls
out 3 feet toward the porch and redesigned the roof.
The high end windows fill the void between the new and the old roof
lines. The central roof now extends 4 feet above the existing one,
while adding more than 8 feet of height to the room.
