Thew! What a scorcher; RUGBY LEAGUE; RISING STAR, 17, ECLIPSES AUSTIN.

Byline: JULIE STOTT

Warrington 34 Catalans 4

SUPERSTAR Blake Austin had his thunder stolen by a kid who has only just turned 17.

Josh Thewlis became the youngest Warrington player to make his debut since record-holder John Duffy 20 years ago.

But the rookie stood up to be counted in sensational style, refusing to be bullied by some crunching French tackles.

The young full-back got a standing ovation when he was substituted with seven minutes remaining, with home fans realising they've got a new star in the making. Even stand-off Austin, who scored a trademark brilliant try to put Warrington in control, was overshadowed by his performance.

Coach Steve Price (right) said: "I would not have put him in if I did not think he was tough.

"He has got a bright future and it's fantastic for him to make his debut.

"I am really pleased with the overall performance. Catalans are a team that always try to jump you early but I thought we contained them well and scored some really good tries."

Catalans coach Steve McNamara added: "It was a great contest for 60 minutes but there was a bit fatigue and some errors from us."

Catalans, who have been away for six of their last seven games, putr-the wind up Warrington with some ferocious early defence and took the lead with a Fouad Yaha try.

Two pieces of brilliance from Daryl Clark and Austin, for two solo tries, turned the game the home side's way before half time.

And when Warrington turned up the heat midway through the second half, go lis, c Catalans fell away. Josh Charnley almost scored, after good work by Thewlis, and moments later centre Bryson Goodwin raced in for his 100th career try. Catalans allowed Sita Akauola to wriggle out of a three-man tackle to touch down for the next try.

Charnley rounded off the try scoring when he chased his own kick, with Dec Patton kicking seven goals from seven.

WARRINGTON: Tries: Clark, Austin, Goodwin, Akauola, Charnley. Pens: Patton 2. Cons: Patton 5. CATALANS: Try: Yaha.
