Thermo acquires handheld x-ray analyzer company.

Waltham, MA 3/29/05--Thermo Electron has acquired NITON for approximately $40.5 million in cask NITON, a maker of portable x-ray analysis instruments for the metal, petrochemicals and environmental markets, had 2004 revenues of $36 million. NITON will join Thermo's Scientific Instruments product line, part of the Life and Laboratory Sciences segment.

This acquisition adds to Thermo's portable x-ray fluorescence (XRF) offerings. This latest acquisition of a portable XRF vendor follows Oxford's purchase of Metorex last year (see IBO 9/15/04), indicating just how dynamic the market has become (see IBO 8/31/04). Based in Billerica, Massachusetts, NITON was founded in 1987. It claims an installed base of more than 6,000 portable analyzers.
