Thermo Fisher introduces automated microplate mover.

THERMO FISHER SCIENTIFIC, INC. has introduced its Orbitor RS, a high-speed microplate mover that offers reliable performance with flexible plate handling. According to the company, extensive vertical reach allows multiple-stacked or high-density instruments to be loaded in a small footprint, also a bidirectional telescoping arm provides superior reach, improved user safety and unlimited base rotations within a 360-degree workspace.


The Orbitor RS accommodates various SBS plate format, from shallow to deep well, in addition to tip boxes and lids, tubes or racks. This flexibility is supported by random or sequential plate access and the ability to mix modes of storage as assay requirements change. The robotic arm is able to pass through the base and remain inside the rotating base while turning, maximizing lab safety, according to the company. The Orbitor RS also has a closed-loop motion control, collision detection and position recovery.

According to the company, the Orbiter RS is a compact, cost-effective solution suitable for smaller workspaces, and it offers numerous storage options and operational flexibility for a multitude of set-ups and configurations. The Orbiter RS is suitable for a variety of instrument loading requirements, from OEMs to individuals working on small, automated workstations with Momentum automation scheduling software.
