There is no such free press like in Kyrgyzstan even in top 10 countries of the world, says Vice PM Otorbaev about Freedom House's Freedom of the Press Index.
There is no such free press like in Kyrgyzstan even in top ten
countries of the world, said Vice Prime Minister Joomart Otorbaev at the
government meeting on May 14 where Kyrgyzstan's world rankings were
discussed. The Vice Prime Minister reminded that the Freedom House
ranked Kyrgyzstan 155th in the Freedom of the Press Index among 197
countries of the world and this way included Kyrgyzstan into the group
of not free countries. The Vice Prime Minister said Kyrgyzstan was
ranked 159th before April 7, 2010. Otorbaev disagreed with this ranking
and said that Kyrgyzstan has freedom of the press. Such ranking shows
that involved ministries and agencies do not work on respective
rankings, he suggested. "We are still considered as not free
country, though we live in a free country for 2 years already. We are
not the ones we call ourselves, but the ones how surrounding people see
us. If we are seen as not free, this means we work bad," he said.
The Vice Prime Minister presented the methodology for global
competitiveness index. The work with institutions preparing those
indexes should be improved too, the Vice Prime Minister said.
