There's no truth about US visa sanctions: Qureshi.

ISLAMABAD -- Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi said on Tuesday that there was no truth in reports that the United States has imposed visa sanctions on Pakistan. Briefing a meeting of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Finance chaired by Ahsan Ullah Tiwana, the foreign minister, however, disclosed that the US did not impose visa restrictions on Pakistani citizens but it has imposed restrictions on three interior ministry officials. According to earlier media reports, the US has included Pakistan in a list of nations facing sanctions under a US law according to which countries refusing to take back deportees and visa over-stayers are denied American visas. Qureshi said that the US embassy in Islamabad has already clarified the matter about visa sanctions. He said that around 70 Pakistani deportees will arrive from the US tomorrow.

The foreign minister said that those Pakistanis, who had gone to the US in the 70s and 80s, had to face verification issues as they possessed manual passports. Qureshi said that Pakistan wanted mutual cooperation with the US on the visa issue. He said that the US has brought about some changes in its policy regarding issuing multiple visas and talks in this regard were underway. While talking about Afghanistan, the foreign minister said that Pakistan's role for peace in the war-torn country was crucial. He said that Pakistan is used as an easy scapegoat (to blame for) when there is a breakdown in negotiations. The foreign minister said that a lot of things have improved concerning the Afghan imbroglio and Pakistan wanted to see intra-Afghan negotiations to end the decades-old conflict.
