There's no need for this racing revamp.

Byline: CHERYL MULLIN Games reviewer

EBOOT is a word that sends a shiver of dread down my spine.

RAnd sometimes that dread is misplaced. Take Batman Begins, Casino Royale, Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Dredd for instance - all 'reboots' which, in some instances, were actually better than the originals.

But then look at the list of truly awful reboots - this year's Fantastic Four, Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes, 2006's The Pink Panther and Terminator Salvation.

The point is, if you're rebooting a franchise that works, then you'd better get it right first time.

And I'm not entirely sure that Ghost Games have managed to do that with Need for Speed.

It's the franchise's first foray onto the next gen consoles - and to be fair it looks pretty - but as for the rest...

The action is set in the fictional city of Ventura Bay, where you are one of five street racers trying to catch the attention of the game's 'icons' - all of whom are real-world motorsport and street racing stars.

Each race you take part in earns you cash and kudos among your fellow racers, and as your reputation and skill builds, your opponents become harder to beat.

On paper it sounds great - and it TOP 10 GAMES 1. | Call of Duty: Black Ops III 2. | Halo 5 Guardians 3. | Fallout 4. | Call of Duty: Ghosts | 5. | Unchartered: The Nathan Drake Collection 6. | Need for Speed 7. | The Last of Us 8. | Grand Theft Auto V 9. | The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt 10. | Assassin's Creed Syndicate (Chart Courtesy of Game) | APP OF THE WEEK Fireplace 3D Lite |from iTunes This app will al-|low you to pretend you're sitting in front of a warm, crackling fire no matter where you are!

is fun in places - but the game play is incredibly repetitive and there are random frame rate hiccups at inopportune moments.

The car just doesn't feel right.

Maybe I've been spoilt playing Forza, but I like to feel that my vehicle has a little heft behind it.

I love the fact that Ghost has tried something different, and there are elements of the game which really work such as the new Club Driving game mode.

But sadly, it misses the mark - leaving it more a case of the reboot needing a reboot.
