There's a goose loose about this eh.. lake.
HARVEY the gander must have thought his goose was cooked when he got stuck in a frozen lake two days before Christmas.
He was spotted 50 metres offshore as guests were having breakfast at Harvey's Point Hotel on the edge of Lough Eske near Donegal town.
Staff recognised Harvey, the hotel pet for the past 20 years, and feared he could become a sitting duck for a hungry poacher hunting the main course for his Christmas dinner.
And they were also concerned they could be on a wild goose chase to rescue Harvey in time.
Using hatchets to cut away the ice, joint hotel owner Jody Gysling and hotel helper James Begley made their way by boat to the stricken bird.
Deirdre McGloin, Jody's sister-inlaw and also joint owner of the hotel, said: "Breakfast guests realised the goose was in trouble when he tried to rise out of the water and couldn't. He was stuck.
"We didn't want to lose him because he is one of a trio of geese that have been around for the past 20 years and have become to be regarded as pets."
Fortunately, the rescuers managed to reach Harvey and he was pulled from the frozen water. Back on shore the goose was given food and his own secure pen where yesterday he was none the worse for his ordeal.
Goosey goosey gander where did you wander...Harvey is back on safer ground yesterday
