Theoretical Predictions Confirmed With Implosion of Liner on Shiva.
Liner performance was documented in this first-ever test using dimensions and energy matched to requirements of the proposed Magnetized Target Fusion (MTF) proof-of-principle program (FPR, April/May 1997, p. 28).
Preliminary assessment of data confirms theoretical predictions: velocity of 3 mm/micro-second corresponding to a kinetic energy of 1.4 megajoules (capacitor bank energy 4.5 megajoules). Dimensional stability, the major concern for this unusually elongated liner geometry (3:1 length to diameter), looked excellent.
More-than-required radial convergence of 15:1 was achieved with negligible inner surface perturbations.
