Theodore Bikel.

Moment contributor Theodore Bikel, the beloved actor and singer, died in July in Los Angeles at age 91. Theo had a remarkable life, which included fleeing Nazi-occupied Vienna, founding an Israeli theater company, co-founding the Newport Folk Festival, fighting for civil rights and so much more. He originated the role of Captain von Trapp in The Sound of Musk on Broadway, and played Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof more than 2,000 times. He appeared on television and in films such as The African Queen, My Fair Lady and The Defiant Ones, for which he was nominated for an Academy Award. A voracious intellectual, he was fluent in many languages including his beloved Yiddish, and wrote the play In the Shoes of Sholom Aleichem. We at Moment will miss his beautiful voice, friendship and wisdom. Last November, Moment honored Theo with a 90th birthday celebration in Washington, DC. You can listen to excerpts from that evening and watch Moment's tribute video at
