Byline: Michael Ashton, a Christadelphian.

Love and marriage, so the old saying assures us, go together like a horse and carriage. Well so do Grace and Peace. Most of the New Testament letters start with the writer sending this greeting: 'Grace and peace from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ.' What is it that unites these two qualities, and what do they teach together that they do not reveal separately?

First of all there is a gracefulness connected with peace. If we know someone who is peaceful, they are likely also to be graceful because there is no abrasiveness in peace. But there is a more fundamental issue involved. Grace speaks about something undeserved. God's grace to mankind is not granted as a reward but as a gift. And so is His peace. Each generation proves that it is astray from God's ways and thoughts, and yet God graciously holds out His message of peace, asking us to accept it.
