Byline: The Register-Guard

Thelma Hagan of Eugene celebrated her 102nd birthday Saturday with a family luncheon at the Eugene Country Club.

She was born Nov. 22, 1906, in Roseburg to Jonas "Jim" and Minerva Trefren. She was delivered with the help of a neighborhood midwife who also helped deliver Hagan's sister, Hila Adelaide, in 1915.

Hagan attended Rose Grade School in Roseburg.

In high school, she excelled in English and history, and was active in theater.

She also taught Sunday school. She graduated from Roseburg High School in 1924.

She attended the University of Oregon in 1924, 1925 and 1926, and was a member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority. Her college education was interrupted when her family moved out of state.

She lived in Tracy, Calif.; Yuma, Ariz.; Bowie, Ariz.; and El Paso, Texas.

She was a grade-school teacher in El Paso for about five years, first teaching first- and second-graders from Mexico and then teaching third- and fourth-graders from the Fort Bliss Army base.

She moved to Portland with her sister in the mid-1930s and began taking nursing classes at the UO annex.

Her next-door neighbor in Portland was Edward Jordan Hagan, a dentist, whom she began dating and eventually married in 1936. The Hagans had three children: Edward, James and Mary Ann.

The couple were members of the Columbia Edgewater Country Club, the Multnomah Athletic Club, the Laurelhurst Dance Club, various bridge and dinner groups, and the Madeleine Parish.

Dr. Hagan practiced dentistry in the Hollywood District from 1934 until his death in 1970, when Thelma Hagan moved to Beaverton.

She moved to Eugene's Sheldon Park assisted living facility in 2003 to be closer to family.

In addition to her three children, she also has 10 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
