Their own Acapulco swim-up bar.

Their own Acapulco swim-up bar Inspired by a Mexican vacation, Julie and Richard Perlman wanted to bring a little bit of the tropics to their Tarzana, California, garden. With the help of landscape designer Nick Williams, they now have an exotic grotto just outside their back door. It features a boulder-lined pool with a swim-up bar.

Three stools built into the shallow end of the dark-plastered pool offer partially submerged seating at the 3-foot-high bar. The curving 2- by 6-foot tiled counter rests on a bond-beam (which runs around the pool's perimeter at deck level). An excavated bartender's pit, complete with built-in cabinets behind, is on the dry side of the pool's shell.

Beyond the bar, rock retaining walls rise from the bond-beam to make an elevated planting area. Williams created a dense, jungly look with palms, tree ferns, raphiolepis, and cascading ivy. He even added a lemon tree behind the bar so the bartender can pick fresh fruit off the branch.
