The week that was 1977.

Byline: Denis Kilcommons ,

With inflation raging at 15% the price of food was causing concern. There was outrage over cabbages costing between pounds 1 and pounds 1.40 and the Department of Prices and Consumer Protection was investigating the soaring price of tea after a call by Huddersfield East MP Mr JPW Mallalieu.

Mr Mallalieu said rocketing prices had forced him to avoid the House of Commons canteen and brew his own in his office.

But there were some gainers. Hampson's garden centres in Dalton and Mirfield reported selling hundreds of coffee plants and difficult getting enough supplies to meet the demand.

West Yorkshire police warned of the danger of middle-aged Peter Pan motorists who drove fast cars and wrongly believed they were as alert and quick-thinking as ever.

The forces road safety notes said: "They strain every nerve and sinew in their efforts to remain youthful. They adopt trendy gear and even trendier hairstyles in order to look the part: and they fall over themselves to be seen in the motorised company of a dolly-bird."

Their advice: grow old gracefully.

Still on the roads, Metro officials admitted that some Kirklees bus stops were in potentially dangerous situations and urged people to tell them or a local councillor and they would investigate.

And a working party rejected consultants' plans to increase car parking charges inside Huddersfield's inner ring road and to introduce parking meters. The deputy leader of Kirklees Council, Clr John Holt, warned that it could turn the centre of Huddersfield into a ghost town.
