The trouble with censorship ...

Byline: By Denise Robertson

Xxx, a new "play" running in London, is the story of the sexual initiation and degradation of a teenage girl by two men and a female dominatrix.

There is simulated sex on stage, which the audience is convinced is real, and two audience members were roused to have oral sex in the aisle the other night, cheered on by audience and cast alike. Predictably, the Keep Britain Clean movement is in full cry and queues to get in are curling round the block. I think it sounds disgusting, but I wouldn't ban it. The trouble with censorship is "Who decides?" Today it's you, and you're liberal and fair and above reproach. And tomorrow it's someone else - and it all goes pear-shaped. I hope the juveniles (of all ages) queuing up for a cheap thrill at the Riverside Studios are bored by the end of the first act and walk out. That's the only censorship that counts ... the noise of departing feet.
