The thighs and lows of hold ups revealed -; we test for the best.

IF YOU have ever had to suffer the indignity of hauling up a pair of hold-ups which seem more attracted to your ankles than your thighs, you're certainly not alone. Originally designed to provide the comfort of stockings without the hassle, hold ups are certainly a great invention - but are some more likely to let you down than others? To banish those hold-up hang-ups for good, we decided to put four popular brands through their paces

Boots Hold Ups

Size: 2 (Medium - Large)

Sheer Finish with Lycra

Colour: Black

Denier: 15

Price: pounds 3.05

DAY 1 Test from new: These hold ups were easy to put on and fitted well. They felt comfortable to wear and, with just a couple of minor adjustments, certainly stayed put all day. The narrow lace top had two silicone hold up strips which, although comfortable on, did actually leave fairly pronounced marks on our thighs when we took them off. Looks-wise, the Boots hold ups weren't quite as flattering as the others.

DAY 2 Test after hand wash: No real difference to speak of after washing although we thought the `wear marks' were less obvious.

Rating: 7/10

Marks & Spencer Ultra Shine Lace Top Stay Ups

Size: Medium

Ultra shine finish with Lycra and a sheer toe for sandal wear

Colour: Natural Tan

Denier: 15

Price: pounds 4.00

DAY 1 Test from new: As with the George (see far right) hold ups, the M&S also took us two goes to get them up to a comfortable leg level - so make sure you err on the larger size when buying. The broad lace tops were flattering, efficient, and they left no marks to speak of either. A great finish and a flattering colour, too.

DAY 2 Test after hand wash: No difference in performance but we did find these easier to put on after washing.

Rating: 9/10

Sainsbury's Silhouette Sheer Nylon Hold Ups

Size: Medium

Sheer Finish with Lycra

Colour: Nearly black

Denier: 10

Price: pounds 4.50

DAY 1 Test from new: The Silhouettes slid on beautifully without any need for pulling, even towards the top of the leg. They have a fairly broad lace top, with one single silicone strip which left virtually no `wear marks'. These hold ups were so comfortable on we literally forgot we were wearing them - and we didn't need to adjust them once. A versatile colour and the flattering sheer finish makes you feel good wearing them, too.

DAY 2 Test after hand wash: No difference in performance whatsoever.

Rating: 10/10

George Silky Pearl Hold Ups

Size: Medium/Large

Silky pearl leg with Lycra

Colour: Natural

Denier: 15

Price: pounds 4.50

DAY 1 Test from new: Although these were medium to large in size (testers 5ft 7in and 5ft 8in), it took us two tries to pull these on properly.

Once on, however, we had no real problems as the hold ups were comfortable and needed only a couple of adjustments after driving. A nice broad lace top, too, and no real wear marks left to speak of either. These hold ups have a very high sheen finish but we found the natural colour a bit on the pale side.

DAY 2 Test after hand wash: No noticeable difference in performance.

Rating: 7/10
