The sonarman's war; a memoir of submarine chasing and mine sweeping in World War II.

The sonarman's war; a memoir of submarine chasing and mine sweeping in World War II.

Jones, H. G.

McFarland & Co.

254 pages

Jones (history educator, archivist, curator) offers a detailed description of the life of a sonarman aboard a wooden submarine chaser during the Allied invasions at Anzio and southern France during World War II. The bonus is that the author is the former sonarman telling the story, which is based on his frequent diary entries, letters to and from family and friends, official ships' logs, and his own study. As the author says, he does not pretend to relate the complete story of antisubmarine and minesweeping warfare. It is rather, he notes, "...simply a rambling and chatty story told through the first-person pronoun..." The book will interest World War II buffs and particularly readers who would relish a first-person view of the war from the decks of the small submarine chasers and minesweepers.
