The secret campsite near Croydon in the grounds of a magnificent stately home; With hot showers, a cafe and beautiful countryside walks, Embers Polesden Lacey is the perfect place for a retreat from the city.

Just a 45 minutes drive fromCroydon, set in the picturesque Surrey Hills, you can find a campsite with all the amenities for a wicked weekend away.

Set in the grounds of a stunning National Trust property, Embers Polesden Lacey, Great Bookham, offers the chance for campers to setup their own tent or rent one of the pre-erected six-metre bell tents.

There are also hot showers, a pizza oven and a cafe serving home-cooked dishes so you don't have to give up any of your home comforts,Surrey Live reports.

Campers can enjoy direct access to the famous house and gardens during opening hours, plus explore 1,400 acres of ancient woodland and timeless trails on site.

Polesden Lacey

The permanent camping site has a purpose-built oak washroom with under-floor heating, piping hot shower cubicles and enough space for a family shower.

There are rustic outside basins to wash the camping dishes.

Add-on options such as bedding, ice boxes and lighting are available for those who can't go without their home comforts.

'Bundle beds' are single, self-inflating camping mattresses with a pillow and 10 tog duvet that can be hired.

Fire pits are provided on each pitch and fire wood can be pre-ordered online or bought on site.

There the option to order freshly made wood-fired pizzas on a Friday or Saturday night.

An on-site shop provides hot drinks such as freshly ground coffee, plus ice cream in scoops or cones and camping essentials such as milk, fresh bread and snacks.

Polesden Lacey's own cafe and coffee shop offer a wide choice of delicious home-cooked dishes, tasty bites and refreshments if you don't fancy cooking yourself.

Similarly, The Cow Shed Coffee Shop, situated near the main entrance, offers freshly made sandwiches, hot light lunches and sweet treats.


Everything is served in takeaway containers to either enjoy in the coffee shop or be taken into the grounds, where you can find a special spot to relax and enjoy the views.

In fact you don't have to lift a finger if you don't want to as the Granary Cafe offers a full menu with a variety of dishes, including unique plates reflecting the spirit of Polesden Lacey.

They also serve a range of delectable cakes and offer classic cream teas. As the campsite is located within the unspoilt National Trust estate, cars can only enter the campsite after 5pm for setting up camp.

If you arrive between the hours of 2pm and 5pm, the campsite manager can shuttle bulky items such as tents to the campsite during a few runs, otherwise you can walk onto the site by footpath and use on-site trolleys.

You could also wander and explore the beautiful estate from 2pm while you wait for friends to join you.

Cars can be parked overnight in the main National Trust car park, about a 10-minute walk from the campsite.
