This reference for journalists, activists, and students presents scientifically accurate and accessible overviews of 24 of the most important issues in the nuclear realm, including health effects, nuclear medicine, food irradiation, and global warming. The book begins with an introduction to risk assessment, and an essay by an experienced journalist with recommendations on covering nuclear issues. In Part II, each 'brief' is based on interviews with named scientists, engineers, or administrators in a nuclear specialty, and each has been reviewed by a team of independent experts. The briefs are organized in sections on radionuclides and human health effects, nuclear energy and other civilian uses, nuclear waste management, nuclear weapons and terrorism, and risk perception and risk communication. A section of additional resources includes a summary of key laws and policies, a brief history of nuclear power, an annotated list of organizations offering information, and a list of recent and classic books, articles, and Web sites representing all sides of the issue. A 35-page glossary defines hundreds of terms. Greenberg is affiliated with the National Center for Neighborhood and Brownfield Redevelopment at Rutgers University.
