The price of secrecy.

HOSE behind the merger Tof two of Newcastle's best known schools have stirred controversy with the manner of their announcement.

A decision already taken when many parents were informed was certain to upset those who felt they should have been consulted.

Some parents will also be annoyed by the fact that they have made choices about their child's future without being given all the information they actually needed.

Amidst the surprise, it may be that community consent to the merger of two fine schools will be slow in forthcoming.

With hindsight, the merger's proponents may wish they had been more open and transparent.
