East Asian economic and socio-cultural studies; 2

A dozen selected papers from a February 2005 international symposium in Munich explore how Chinese sources from earliest times to the middle 19th century portrayed that part of the world that is undergirded by ocean. Their topics include the sea as barrier and contact zone, a mercantile outlook in Late Ming China, Xu Jing's An Illustrated Account of a Diplomatic Mission to Korea in the Xuanhe Period (1119-26), and coastal maps from the beginning of the Quing dynasty. Two of the papers are in Chinese. Reproductions of 16 maps are included. There is no index.
