The pass-through zigs and zags.

Dramatically outlined, this counter is a good spot for breakfast; it's also a fast way to get food into the dining room.

Berkeley architect Anthony Cutri of Sol Arc wanted an economical way of adding visual interest to the fairly straightforward pass-through concept. He built the wall between kitchen and dining room of conventional stud framing covered with gypsum board, leaving an irregularly shaped 5-foot-long section open at chest height. The ziggurat outline of the opening rises 2 1/2 feet for comfortable headroom at the center.

A 2- by 5-foot butcher-block counter, screwed to the base of the opening, straddles the partition. On the kitchen side, a 3-inch-deep notch makes room for the stove's pop-up vent hood. Spice bottles tuck into the recess alongside.
