The outdoor room idea.

1. Mosquito-net curtains for

the 10- by 15-foot openings

Diaphanous curtains backlit by the late-afternoon sun allow soft, warm light to filter into this outdoor room. The 15-foot-high draperies, covering 10-foot-wide openings, are made of a heavyweight ultraviolet-resistant mosquito netting. They can be drawn to the side to allow views out to the garden and beyond the hilltop house.

Designer Ken Ronchetti of Rancho Santa Fe, California, designed the house in an architectural style he calls "desert coastal." Its flowing form has pronounced vertical and horizontal lines broken by open expanses or by windows and sliding glass doors. To blur the sense of boundary between interior and exterior, he installed a Mexican terra cotta floor that starts indoors, runs through the outdoor room, flows down some steps, and wraps around a lap pool.
