The only councillor to refuse pay rise; Views of Wales.
SIR - I would like to respond to Christopher Short's letter in particular his comments about whether national or local politicians have refused pay rises and in the case of Vale of Glamorgan councillors whether they have refused to sit on their new PS800 chairs in the recently refurbished council chamber.
Well as a Vale of Glamorgan county councillor I have to admit that I have spurned the opportunity to stand up during council meetings despite my constantly public voiced disgust at the near PS300,000 refurbishment of the council chamber carried out under the Labour-run administration of the council which I feel is not only a complete and utter waste of money but has rendered the chamber unfit for its primary purpose.
I do understand however that I am the only local councillor in Wales to have refused the recent pay rise awarded to county councillors and have also voluntarily taken a further pay cut of my existing allowance which represents an annual reduction of PS800 per annum in empathy with all public and private sector workers currently subject to continuing wage restraints. Councillor Kevin Mahoney (UKIP) Sully ward Vale of Glamorgan County Council
