Sewell (mathematics, Texas A&M U.) introduces finite difference and finite element methods for the computer solution of ordinary and partial differential equations to senior-level undergraduates or beginning graduate students. He reviews direct solutions of linear systems, then moves on to describing initial value ordinary differential equations, including the Euler method, the initial value diffusion problem, the initial value transport and wave problems, boundary value problems, and the finite element methods. Sewell provides answers to selected exercises and appendices on solving PDEs with PDE2D, the Fourier stability method, and MATLAB programs.
